AVIC-S2 vs. AVIC-S1

The new Pioneer AVIC-S2 GPS navigator is now available for purchase on Pioneer’s website for a price of $400. The older AVIC-S1 costs $399.

The difference between them is that the new AVIC-S2 has an integrated MP3 player, but comes with a 1GB memory card... If you remember, the older model features a 2GB card. Thus, the MP3 player is useless, because you don't even have enough space for the maps, let alone music files. Looks like you'll need another SD card if you want to use this feature.

The older AVIC-S1 is still available on Amazon for only $268.

The AVIC-S2 specs show it comes with 2GB of flash memory onto which the maps are preloaded so you don't need any of the SD card space for them.

Given the cost of memory cards these days, the upgrade to 2GB card is very low. In fact, I would by-pass it and go straight to a 4GB card, so the 1GB that comes with it...use it in your camera, or as a spare.
